How to Pitch Your Song to Spotify Playlists (2026 Guide)
2 June 2026 · 7 min read
Editorial pitching is one form, one shot, and one week of lead time — but the outcome is decided by everything you do in the month before you press submit. Here is the sequence we run on every client single.
Deliver at least four weeks before release
Spotify for Artists requires a minimum of seven days between pitch submission and release date, but seven days is a floor, not a target. Editors plan New Music Friday and genre flagship lists two to three weeks out, and independent curators refresh on monthly cycles.
Send final audio to your distributor at least four weeks before the date. That buys a week of buffer for delivery errors, a week for metadata cleanup, and two clean weeks inside the editorial consideration window.
Fix metadata before you fix the pitch
Genre, mood, instrumentation, culture tags, and songwriter credits are the first filters an editor's tooling applies. A track tagged with the wrong primary genre never reaches the human who would have liked it.
Check that your artist profile is claimed, the release is linked to the right artist ID, Canvas is uploaded, and the credits are complete. These are unglamorous and they decide more outcomes than pitch copy does.
Write pitch copy an editor can reuse
You get roughly 500 characters. Spend them on facts an editor can verify and repurpose: the sound in one clean comparison, the concrete traction number, the release context, and the market you are strongest in.
Cut adjectives. 'Cinematic alt-R&B for late-night drives, 41k monthly listeners, first single from a September album, strongest in London and Berlin' beats a paragraph of self-description every time.
The pitch does not end at submission
Editorial is a minority of playlist reach. Independent and algorithmic placement is where most sustained streaming comes from, and both respond to first-week behaviour: save rate, completion rate, and repeat listens.
Push your own audience hard in the first 72 hours, keep the track in your own playlists, and pitch independent curators in parallel. Release Radar and Discover Weekly pick up tracks that people keep, not tracks that people click.
What a realistic result looks like
Most well-prepared independent singles land somewhere between a handful of independent playlist adds and one mid-tier editorial slot. Flagship placement is rare and is usually the product of a run of releases, not one lucky pitch.
Judge the campaign on save rate and listener growth over eight weeks, not on whether a single list added you in week one.
